2018/12/13 - Risk of network outages in west campus, 13-14 December

On Thursday 13th and Friday, 14th December, there will be a risk of network outages in all buildings located within the area of campus that is west of South St and north of Prince Alfred St.  This includes:

  • 33 South St
  • Adamson Annexe
  • Adelaide Tambo House
  • Building Maintenance
  • Centenary House
  • Grounds and Gardens offices
  • Guy Bulter House
  • Helen Joseph House
  • HKE Department
  • IOF headquarters
  • NELM
  • Nelson Mandela Kitchen
  • Oakdene House
  • PSAM
  • Ruth First House
  • Sports Admin
  • Stanley Kidd House
  • Stockenstrom Place
  • transit accommodation on African St and South St
  • Victoria Mxenge House

The Vice Chancellor's Lodge and CO2 research site (Orchard) will not be affected.

The planned electrical maintenance at the Stockenstrom substation will interrupt the normal electricity supply to the network distribution equipment which serves the west campus sector.  As an alternative, the Electrical Section has arranged to supply power from a generator to the network equipment.  However, they expect that there will be a one hour period on Thursday and another on Friday when the generator supply will also be interrupted.  During those times, the network equipment can only be powered by UPS batteries.

At any stage in the maintenance,  should the generator fail and the UPS batteries be depleted, all network services (including IP telephones and Wi-Fi) in the area will be unavailable.
