Shortly before 1PM the University lost access to the IPv6 Internet.

You will experience this as slow responses from IPv6-enabled websites (such as Google or Facebook), and you will be unable to access IPv6-only resources (such as ipv6.google.com).

The outage is caused by two fibre breaks on the SANReN network (East London-Durban and Port Elizabeth-Cape Town). As a result our traffic has been routed on a more scenic link via Bisho-Umtata-Pietermaritzburg-Durban. Unfortunately, whilst this link supports IPv4, it does not support IPv6.

We've previously raised the issue of IPv6 support on this leg of the network with TENET. The root cause appears to be that some of the equipment deployed on this leg simply does not support IPv6. We've asked that this be included in future planning.
