The deployment of new sector distribution switches has resulted in the changing of some DNS second-level domains for computers in wardens flats. Specifically:
- wardena has become wardenh (Hill)
- wardenb has become wardenn (North)
- wardenm has become wardenp (St Peters)
- wardens has become wardenm (Main)
Most people will not notice this change. However, if you're connecting to such a computer remotely (for instance from your office), you might need to update the host name/DNS name you're using. For example, if your computer was called speg-1.wardena.ru.ac.za, you'll now need to connect to speg-1.wardenh.ru.ac.za.
At present the wardens networks for the "hill" and "main" sectors actually span multiple sectors, in violation of our final network design. This will be corrected over time, resulting in further splits:
- wardenh will be split into wardenh (Hill), wardenw (West), wardeni (Mid), and wardens (South)
- wardenm will be split into wardenm (Main), wardeni (Mid), and wardens (South)
This second round of changes will be done a residence at a time, and probably over the course of several weeks. These changes will involve changes in both IP address and DNS name. Again, most people should not notice the change -- if your computer is correctly configured to use DHCP, it'll automatically pick up the new address. Again if you're connecting to such a computer remotely, you might need to update the host name/DNS name you're using.
