2011/08/16 - unscheduled International Internet access outage
At about 8:30AM, all South African higher educational institutions lost access to the international Internet.

You will likely experience this outage as an ERR_DNS_FAIL or ERR_CONNECT_FAIL error when trying to access websites hosted outside South Africa (even those ending in .za). When accessing secure (https://) web sites, your browser may report that the connection has timed out or the site is unreachable.

We've received the following feedback from TENET:

QUOTE
The SEACOM circuit to London has just gone down. We have informed our DR bandwidth provider and will have the DR bandwidth online within 2 hours as per our redundancy contract.

In the mean time we are chasing up with SEACOM to find out what the problem is and how long before it will be resolved, though there is no current estimated time for restoration at this point.
International Internet access has been restored. We've received the following message from TENET:

QUOTE
SEACOM is now back online. We will continue to monitor and ensure that it is stable however, but from the looks of things traffic should now be flowing normally again.

According to information from SEACOM the outage was caused by a terrestrial break in the fiber in Egypt on the SMW4 cable system. Once we have official confirmation/an incident report we will send more information.
