This afternoon there was a power cut affecting most of the lower half of campus as a result of a fault in the Matthews house sub station. Whilst power has now been restored to most of campus, there's an area around Founders dining hall that remains without power. This is causing a regional network outage, including some buildings that currently have electrical power. The following buildings are affected by this:

• Botha house
• College house
• Cory house
• Founders dining hall
• Founders lodge
• Jan Smuts house
• Matthews house
• New house annexe

The electricians estimate that power will only be restored during the course of Friday.

Once power is restored, the networking in the affected areas will likely recover automatically. It is possible, however, that some switches may not recover properly (there's always a handful that have problems after any major power outage).

If power is restored before 4PM today, we will attend to any faults that occur. However, if power is restored after this, nobody will be available to attend to any faults until 3 January 2010. See http://www.ru.ac.za/informationtechnology/...terhourssupport for more information.
