At approximately 11:30 this morning, the University lost access to the commodity Internet as a result of a routing loop. Sites that are part of the national research and education network (i.e. other universities) remain reachable. Users will likely experience these outages as an ERR_DNS_FAIL or ERR_CONNECT_FAIL error when trying to access websites on the commodity Internet.
The fault has been reported to TENET's service desk and they're currently investigating.

We're told that this is a result of a power failure at the Durban University of Technology, which is where TENET's network meets the SEACOM submarine fibre. For reasons that are not yet known, DUT's standby generators didn't start when they lost municipal power. DUT's standby electricians have been called out and are en-route to investigate the problem.
This is affecting some national Internet access too, since the BGP route announcements for these networks come out of Durban too.
