Each long vacation we make adjustments to the demand side management values of the University's Internet quota system. These adjustments are intended to allow those staff and students who remain in town to make more effective use of the Internet bandwidth that's available at these times.

This vacation, we'll be making such adjustments between Sunday 30 November 2008 and Monday 2 February 2009. From Sunday the following scale factors apply:

• 08:00–22:59 — a scale factor of 0.5
• 23:00–07:59 — normal term time values (23:00–00:59: 0.2, 01:00–06:59: 0.04, 07:00–07:59: 0.2)

These changes effectively double the per-user Internet quota during the day, whilst leaving the night time values unchanged.

During the course of the vacation, we're likely to make further adjustments (either up or down) depending on the absolute demand on the University's Internet bandwidth. Any adjustments that reduce the amount of bandwidth available to users will be posted to this noticeboard in advanced. You are encouraged to check here for up-to-date information rather than making assumptions.

We've just extended the 23:00–00:59 DSM window to start at the end of the working day (17:00). With immediate effect, the following apply:

• 08:00–16:59 — a scale factor of 0.5
• 17:00–00:59 — a scale factor of 0.2
• 01:00–06:59 — a scale factor of 0.04
• 07:00–07:59 — a scale factor of 0.2

Please be aware that we take the current DSM values into consideration when processing applications for quota credits.

With immediate effect, the following scale factors apply:

• Monday–Friday
  • 08:00–16:59 — a scale factor of 0.4
  • 17:00–00:59 — a scale factor of 0.08
  • 01:00–06:59 — a scale factor of 0.04
  • 07:00–07:59 — a scale factor of 0.08
  
  
• Saturday-Sunday
  • 07:00–00:59 — a scale factor of 0.08
  • 01:00–06:59 — a scale factor of 0.04

For the duration of the University shutdown period, a scale factor of 0.02 applies across the board. The previously announced values will reapply from 5 January.

From Monday 2 February until 23:59 on Friday 6 February, the following will apply:

• 08:00–16:59 — a scale factor of 1.0
• 17:00–00:59 — a scale factor of 0.04
• 01:00–06:59 — a scale factor of 0.02
• 07:00–07:59 — a scale factor of 0.04

Note that this signifies the return of normal quota values during working hours. The extended benefits remain outside of working hours.

From Saturday 7 February 2009, normal term time values will apply, marking then end of the quota system adjustments for the December vac.
