2021/06/01 - Scheduled maintenance, 1 June
During the Tuesday, 1 June maintenance window, maintenance work will affect certain services, starting at 5:30 PM and being completed before midnight. The following work is planned: Server software updates: software on the servers which provide the following services will be updated, resulting in outages of up to 15 minutes per server.  A migration to new physical servers will result in an additional outage of 15 minutes per server. DNS DHCP NTP RT Web proxies Registration system Incoming e-mail Outgoing e-mail IMAP e-mail mailboxes Webmail Mailing lists SMS Provisioning (web proxy autodiscovery) Wi-Fi and VPN authentication CHERTL Evaluation Assistant Network graphs Network monitoring Terminal Four content management system RU Single Sign-On system Main web server (www.ru.ac.za, etc) University administration and meal booking systems SEALS Library consortium services Network printing services (iPrint/PaperCut) File servers/home directories (gnu, serval) While we try to publish a list of all service-affecting work here in advance, the list should not be considered exhaustive and other low impact work may also be undertaken during the maintenance window. 2021/05/04 - Scheduled maintenance, 4 May
During the Tuesday, 4 May maintenance window, maintenance work affecting a number of services will occur, starting at 5:30 PM and being completed before midnight. The following work is planned: Storage systems: storage area network switches will be replaced. No noticeable outage is expected, though unexpected problems during the upgrade would cause an outage affecting almost all services. Maintenance work will also be undertaken on the PBX. PBX: software on the university telephone system will be updated.  We expect that all phones (IP telephones and emergency phones) will be unable to make or receive calls for a period of up to an hour.  Phones will likely show a message reading "Discover 146.231.128.90" during that time.  The phones themselves will also need to install new software, which takes 10-15 minutes.
2021/05/02 - Scheduled electrical maintenance, 2 May
Electrical maintenance work will be undertaken in the university's Struben data centre on Sunday, 2 May, starting at 8:00 and being completed by 13:00.  A temporary alternative power supply has been provided so we do not expect that there will be any impact to services provided in the data centre.  However, in the event of unforeseen problems, it is possible that a power outage could occur and would result in all services provided in the data centre being unavailable.
2021/03/02 - Scheduled maintenance, 2 March
During the Tuesday, 2 March maintenance window, maintenance work affecting a number of services will occur, starting at 5:30 PM and being completed before midnight. The following work is planned: TERMINALFOUR: the TERMINALFOUR content management system will be updated. We expect an outage of at least two hours during which time it will not be possible to change content managed by TERMINALFOUR, but already published web pages will still be accessible. Server software updates: software on the servers which provide the following services will be updated, resulting in outages of up to 15 minutes per server. Normal server software maintenance will result in a 15 minute outage for TERMINALFOUR, though.
2021/02/09 - Scheduled maintenance, 9 February
During the Tuesday, 9 February maintenance window, maintenance work will affect telephone services, starting at 5:30 PM. The following work is planned: PBX: encryption certificates on the university telephone system will be updated. We expect that all phones (IP telephones and emergency phones) will be unable to make or receive calls for a period of about 15 minutes. Phones will likely show a message reading "Discover 146.231.128.90" during that time. This work is being conducted during a minor maintenance period. Should there be a compelling reason why this work should not go ahead as planned, please contact support@ru.ac.za before 3:00 PM on Tuesday.
