2014/06/03 - Scheduled maintenance
During the Tuesday, June 3rd maintenance window, maintenance work affecting a number of services will occur, starting at 5:30 PM and being completed before midnight. The following will occur:
  • Core and distribution routers: software on all core and distribution routers (except for those serving the St Peters Campus sector). In most buildings, this will result in a network outage (including IP telephony) of approximately 15 minutes.
  • AMM data centre UPS: emergency electrical maintenance will be performed on the UPS serving the AMM data centre. This work is necessary to fix a faulty static bypass switch, and there is a risk of an unplanned power outage until the work is completed. It is a continuation of the maintenance performed in early April (hopefully this time with the correct part). Since we now know this work will almost inevitably cause a power outage in the data centre, the same mitigation strategies will be put in place as in April. A power outage will cause a network outage in most buildings in the Hill campus sector.
  • Registration system: the network registration system will be moved to a new server. It will not be possible to register new devices or update old registrations for at least an hour.
  • Server software updates: software on the servers which provide the following services will be updated, resulting in outages of approximately five minutes per server:
    • DNS
    • DHCP
    • RT
    • Web proxies
    • Incoming e-mail
    • SMS
    • Apple Software Update Server
    • Provisioning (web proxy autodiscovery, telephone provisioning)
    • RU Single Sign-on
  • Edge router software update: software on the primary Internet edge router will upgraded. No noticeable outage is expected, though if unforeseen problems occur, an Internet outage may result.
This maintenance work is being undertaken in the ITSC-approved scheduled maintenance window, and should be completed before midnight. More information about maintenance windows and maintenance periods.
The UPS maintenance in AMM has been successfully completed, resolving the issue first noted in April.
