2009/11/07 - Unscheduled Internet Outage
At about 8:30 this morning, we lost access to international sites. This is unrelated to the scheduled work undertaken by Neotel, and is a result of a fibre break between Durban and Umhlanga (on the route to the SEACOM landing station at Mtunzini). It affects all higher educational sites in South Africa, not just Rhodes.

Users will likely experience this as an ERR_DNS_FAIL or ERR_CONNECT_FAIL error when trying to access websites hosted overseas (note that this includes some sites that end in .za).

Dark Fibre Africa, who maintain the fibre in question, have found the fault and are currently in the process of splicing the cable.
QUOTE(TENET @ Nov 7 2009, 1:06 PM)
Technicians are on site and are busy running a temporary repair due to multiple cable breaks caused by a contractor from another company digging up the roads over an approximately 2km stretch.
