2008/11/12 - Unscheduled Internet Outage
Shortly after 8AM, the University lost all access to the Internet. Users will likely experience this as an ERR_DNS_FAIL or ERR_CONNECT_FAIL error when trying to access websites.

The cause of the outage is currently not known, but is a fault somewhere on our upstream service provider's network. TENET's service desk detected the fault and have already initiated an investigation. We're awaiting feedback from them.
Shortly after 10AM, Neotel phoned us to tell us that they'd isolated the problem as a fibre break about 700m from their point of presence in North End, Port Elizabeth. At the time they said that the expected time-to-repair would be about 45 minutes. They've clearly not met that, and we're attempting to find more information on what's happening.
Whilst Internet access has been restored, we're currently experiencing a lot of link flap. This means that access is intermittently unavailable.

I've just been contact with our service manager about this to escalate the problem. He's indicated that he's aware of the problem, and that Neotel have indicated to him that their estimated time-to-repair is about 1:30PM.
