2008/09/27 - Unscheduled Internet Outage
About ten minutes ago we lost access to the Internet. The fault has been reported to TENET's service desk, and we're awaiting feedback.
Neotel have just phoned to let us know that the fault is somewhere on our last mile -- i.e. it just affects Rhodes. They're sending a technician to investigate. There's no estimated time to repair
The outage is apparently due to a cable break somewhere between Port Elizabeth and Grahamstown. Neotel's engineers are currently trying to re-route traffic around the break.
The cable break was apparently caused by vandals/thieves who dug up the fibre and removed a portion. Neotel have been unable to route around the problem, and so we're dependent on the break being repaired. Unfortunately bad weather at the break site is hampering Neotel's technicians' progress in this regard. Because of the weather conditions, they're unwilling to commit to a time-to-repair.
