2008/09/03 - Dhcp Registration Spring Cleaning
The IP registration/DHCP database is being checked for consistency. Some users might notice:
  • DNS names of their PCs changing (this is to ensure that each PC is registered with a unique name that is consistent across all the networks it's registered on)
  • PCs being de-registered (this only occurs in cases were the registration information is obviously incorrect because it is inconsistent)
If a PC that you use is being adversely affected, please contact the helpdesk for assistance.

PCs being de-registered (this only occurs in cases were the registration information is obviously incorrect because it is inconsistent)

Examples of inconsistencies that may cause PCs to be de-registered from specific networks include:
  • registrations that belong to non-existent users
  • old registrations recorded without a responsible person
  • PCs that are registered with the same MAC address on both a wired and a wireless network (PCs use different MAC addresses for their wired and wireless network cards)
  • multiple registrations with the same MAC address/asset number but different usernames
We'll attempt to apply some common sense when deciding which registrations to remove. In most instances this means that, when inconsistencies occur, the oldest registration(s) will be de-registered.
