On Tuesday 31st January we reach the cut-off deadline for students registered in 2005. This has a number of implications of which students should be aware:
E-mail & Internet Access
All students who haven't yet registered for 2006 will find that they'll be unable to access their e-mail and the Internet. In order to regain access, students will have to re-register for 2006.
Postgraduate students who're still writing up and who aren't intending to re-register in 2006 can regain access by obtaining a letter of authorisation from the Registrar or Assistant Registrar. This letter should be taken to the Help Desk on the middle floor of Struben Building together with your 2005 student card.
Private Computers
In addition all private student computers registered for use in academic departments, public labs, residences, wireless or anywhere else on the network will be de-registered during the course of the 31st. As a result, these machines will no longer be able to obtain an IP address via DHCP and will be barred from accessing University network resources.
Students who wish to use a private computer on the network during 2006 will need to re-register their machines. In order to do this, they'll need to bring their 2006 student card as well as the MAC address of their computer to the Help Desk on the middle floor of Struben Building. Depending on where on the network their wishing to register their computer, ther may be other requirements as well. For instance, registration within an academic department requires a letter of authorisation from the relevent department's head or chief technical officer, and registration within a residence requires the completion of a ResNet application form. More details on the requirements for using private machines on campus can be found at http://www.ru.ac.za/resnet/campus.html.
The same rules for postgraduates apply; those who're not re-registering and still require use of their private machine should approach the Registrar or Assistant Registrar for authorisation.
University-owned computers
University-owned computers (i.e. those that have an asset number) that are registered to students will be reviewed. Those that are registered in the name of students who left in 2004 or earlier will be de-registered (those registered to students who were here in 2005 will remain).
Please note that the onus is on departments to ensure that they inform us of the students to whom they allocate computers. If you're still here and using an University-owned computer that is deregistered as a result of this, please contact your department's chief technical officer (or equivelent) and get them to supply us with up-to-date information. This information should include your username, the MAC address of the computer, as well as its asset number.
