Over the last week or so there have been at least three separate incidents involving Guy Butler House students violating the University's acceptable use policy (http://www.ru.ac.za/aup) using their computers in residence. Each of these incidents involved a different culprit, typically involved the use of another person's username and/or IP address (in other words, some form of identity theft), and had the end affect of inconveniencing both the IT Division as well as other members of the residence.
Since the residents of Guy Butler house seem to have too much free time on their hands and are clearly incapable of behaving in a responsible manner on the network, I've removed the residence's network access in its entirety. Students within Guy Butler currently have access to other computers located within the residence itself, but not to anything beyond the residence. This is in line with the second paragraph of the terms and conditions of the ResNet service (http://www.ru.ac.za/resnet/fineprint.html).
I'd appreciate it if you could spread the word within Guy Butler that if the students want access to the network back they need to start behaving in a socially responsible way. I'm prepared to give the residence network access back once we've had an apology and an undertaking to behave from each of the culprits we know about.
