In order to achieve a consistant naming scheme, the DNS names of several default gateways and network addresses have been changed. These changes should have very limited affect as they're not widely used -- they exist largely for cosmetic reasons.

Users who have made use of network and default gateway addresses in, for example, firewall configurations should review their configurations and ensure that, if they're using DNS, their DNS names are accurate.

The new naming scheme means that for a given subnet we have the following:
  • example.rhodent.ru.ac.za as the network address
  • example.gw.ru.ac.za as the default gateway
  • host.example.ru.ac.za for host entries within the subnet
The names of core routers will also be changing (some of these changes have already happened) to fit within the core.ru.ac.za domain. For example, the core router in struben building will, at some stage in the near future, change its name from nortel8600a.switch.ru.ac.za to struben.core.ru.ac.za.

These changes should allow for neater, more informative and consistant traceroutes between hosts.
