2007/08/04 - Another Unscheduled Internet Outage
It appears that Telkom have managed to break our Internet access again. The outage is not as wide-spread as yesterday -- it appears to only affect Rhodes and a few other sites in the Eastern Cape.

Until this fault is resolved, Rhodes has no external Internet connectivity whatsoever. This means that you won't be able to browse the web, and both incoming and outgoing e-mail will be queued for delivery after the fault is resolved.

The fault has been reported to Telkom CNC. We'll post updates here if and when we get them from Telkom.
I've managed to confirm that the fault only affects Rhodes and parts of Fort Hare and Walter Sisulu universities. Given the geographical distribution, my guess is we're looking at a transmission somewhere fault between Bisho and East London similar to the one we experienced in April. I haven't managed to get Telkom to confirm this; they phoned about an hour ago to tell me they thought things were working and seemed surprised when I disagreed.

I've now escalated our fault ticket up a level within Telkom's reporting structure, so hopefully we'll actually get someone to pay attention now.
