2005/04/21 - Jackal Outage
The Novell server Jackal experienced a critical disk error before
lunch today. An attempted disk repair is in progress and is estimated to last
until 15:30. Hopefully the server will boot afterwards.
The first attempted disk repair failed. We have more or less ascertained that it is not a hardware failure that caused the problem. Another attempt at repairing the disk is in progress and should complete about 16:30 if all goes well. If not, we may have to reinstall the system and restore the data from backup tapes.
The second attempt at repairing the disk volume seems to have worked. We still have no idea what caused the problem and it remains to be seen if the system will be stable. Please remember to save your work regularly and to make backups.
